The Mojave Desert has been a refuge for artists of all kinds, offering solitude and inspiration. JTNPA invests in the arts, both through park programs and community events.
Artist in Residence Program
Joshua Tree National Park’s Artist in Residence (AiR) Program, supported by contributions from JTNPA, allows artists of all kinds to immerse themselves in the park’s landscape and history. AiR welcomes visual and performance artists, writers, and musicians.
The AiR program has two main goals:
- Creating space and opportunity for the selected artists to reflect, create, and be inspired by the unique environment of Joshua Tree National Park
- Encouraging artists to share personal interpretations of the park with the public through visitor outreach experiences
The residency provides time and space for artists to pursue their creative work while fostering a deeper public understanding of Joshua Tree’s natural and historical resources.
Black Rock Art Gallery
Nestled in one of Joshua Tree National Park’s most iconic Joshua tree forests, the Black Rock Art Gallery, located in the Black Rock Nature Center, invites visitors to discover the worlds of local artists. Exhibitions feature work by selected artists from the Artist in Residence program, as well as shows from community collaborators.
The gallery program is curated by BoxoPROJECTS, an organization known for its commitment to supporting artists whose work engages with place, ecology, and community. Together, JTNPA and BoxoPROJECTS bring compelling, thought-provoking exhibitions to the Black Rock Art Gallery, enriching the visitor experience and highlighting the vital role of the arts in conservation and education.
JTNPA West Art Gallery
The JTNPA West Art Gallery, located in the JTNPA West Park Store in Old Town Yucca Valley, is a vibrant space dedicated to celebrating creative voices inspired by the natural beauty, cultural richness, and environmental significance of Joshua Tree National Park. The gallery features group exhibitions showcasing the work of artists from across Southern California and beyond.
This gallery serves as both a creative and conservation-minded initiative. Proceeds from artwork sales directly support the protection and preservation of Joshua Tree National Park through the work of JTNPA. The gallery uplifts and sustains the local and regional art community by providing a platform for their work to be seen, appreciated, and collected.
