La Asociación del Parque Nacional Joshua Tree se enorgullece de presentar un nuevo programa de participación artística multicultural, ¡Artistas Afuera!
A partir de enero de 2024, ¡Artistas Afuera! llevará a un artista, colectivo, activista comunitario o portador de cultura que se identifique como latino al Parque Nacional Joshua Tree para un evento artístico mensual en el Anfiteatro Cottonwood. Ubicado como la entrada sur del parque, el Anfiteatro Cottonwood se encuentra en medio de panoramas abiertos y vistas ininterrumpidas del desierto de Colorado.
An Expression of Latinx Art, Culture, and Identity
The Joshua Tree National Park Association is proud to present a new multicultural arts engagement program, ¡Artistas Afuera!
¡Artistas Afuera! will bring one Latinx identifying artist, collective, community activist, or culture bearer into the Joshua Tree National Park for a monthly arts event at the Cottonwood Amphitheater. Located at the southern entrance to the park, the Cottonwood Amphitheater sits amidst open panoramas and uninterrupted views of the Colorado Desert. This intimate setting will be the backdrop for five different artists who will have the opportunity to facilitate a public performance, interactive experience, or demonstration that articulates or expresses their interpretation of the Latinx experience as it intersects with unique issues that face their community.

Alexandra Martinez
Al escribir poesía desde el punto de vista de la diversa flora y fauna que se encuentran en el desierto de Mojave, deconstruiremos y reconstruiremos ideas sobre la identidad y la idea de ecosistemas interconectados.
Alexandra Martinez es una poeta y escritora galardonada que vive en Joshua Tree, CA. Tiene dos obras publicadas, Heartbreaker, y su libro más reciente se titula Our Lady of Perpetual Desert y fue ganador del Premio Hillary Gravendyk. Martínez, criada en el interior del sur de California, te lleva a sus mundos como hija de inmigrantes que viven en el Inland Empire. Sus palabras brillan con recuerdos, sueños perdidos y la experiencia aleccionadora del presente.
Vivir en Joshua Tree te da mucho espacio para estar sola y ser creativa porque no hay mucho más que hacer, así que tienes que trabajar en lo que quieres trabajar. En mi próximo taller para ¡Artistas Afuera!, realmente espero que la gente se lleve a casa el hecho de que escribir es una tarea sencilla que pueden hacer en su día a día y que es fácil darse pequeños impulsos para poder escribir y no sentirse tan intimidados por escribir o compartir su trabajo. Estoy muy emocionada de ver lo que la gente crea durante el taller.

Alexandra Martinez
Through crafting poems from the point of view of various flora and fauna found in the Mojave desert we will be deconstructing and reconstructing ideas about identity and the idea of interconnected ecosystems.
Alexandra Martinez is an award winning poet and writer based in Joshua Tree, CA. She has two published works, Heartbreaker, and her most recent book is titled Our Lady of Perpetual Desert was winner of the Hillary Gravendyk Prize. Martinez, raised within Southern California’s inland sprawl, brings you into her worlds as the daughter of immigrants living in the Inland Empire. Her words glow with memory, lost dreams, and the sobering experience of the present.

Living in Joshua Tree, there’s a lot of space to be alone and creative because there isn’t much else going on so you have to work on what you want to work on. In my workshop for ¡Artistas Afuera!, I really hope that people get to take home the fact that writing is a simple task that they can do in their day-to-day and that it’s easy to give yourself little prompts to be able to write and to not be so intimidated by writing or by sharing their work and I’m really excited to see what people come up with throughout the workshop.

Juan Thorp
El automatismo es una forma relajante de hacer arte dibujando o pintando utilizando la mente inconsciente. He estado creando dibujos automáticos de forma intermitente durante mucho tiempo. Me siento un explorador de mi propio arte, sin saber exactamente qué estoy creando con estas líneas. Parece haber un lenguaje ahí, escrito en glifos abstractos. También me encanta crear conejitos antropomórficos en el espacio y sapos del desierto en ropa y paisajes occidentales. Actualmente estoy explorando el dibujo digital y convirtiendo el arte en juegos que cualquiera puede jugar.
Juan Thorp vive en Rimrock, CA, con su esposa Susie. Dirige la galería de arte Space Truckin en Yucca Valley, CA. Su galería presenta exposiciones grupales e individuales mensuales con temas nuevos y divertidos. La galería también alberga talleres de dibujo, impresión y sociales. Juan Thorp tiene una licenciatura en Bellas Artes de Cal Poly Pomona.
Viviendo aquí, he notado que la inmensidad del lugar me permite conectarme con mi subconsciente, y de ahí es de donde proviene realmente mi arte. Para mi taller, voy a crear una obra de arte de principio a fin. Enseñaré muchas técnicas sobre técnicas de acrílico a base de agua y ser un poco más libre, y también aprenderemos muchos conceptos básicos sobre cómo cortar papel, cómo usar diferentes medios, y esto es lo que voy a enseñar.

Juan Thorp
Automatism is a relaxing way to make art by drawing or painting using the unconscious mind. I’ve been creating automatic drawings on and off for a long time. I feel like an explorer in my own art, not exactly knowing what I am creating with these lines. There seems to be a language in there, written in abstract glyphs. I also love creating anthropomorphic bunnies in space and desert toads in Western wear and landscapes. I am currently exploring digital drawing and turning art into games anyone can play.
Juan Thorp lives in Rimrock, CA, with his wife Susie. He runs the art gallery Space Truckin in Yucca Valley, CA. His gallery hosts monthly group and solo exhibits with new and fun themes. The gallery also hosts drawing, printing, and social workshops. Juan Thorp has a BA in Fine Arts from Cal Poly Pomona.
Living out here, I’ve noticed that it’s the openness and the vastness that allows me to kind of tap into my subconscious, and that’s really where my art is coming from. So for my workshop, I’m going to be doing, from beginning to end, creating a piece of art. So teaching a lot of techniques about water-based acrylic techniques and being a little more free, and then also learning a lot of basics about cutting paper, how to use different medias, and this is what I’m going to be teaching.

La ropa es más que una simple tela: es mi lienzo, donde se entrelazan historias de rebelión, orgullo cultural y crecimiento. Cada pieza, desde los antiguos ecos aztecas hasta la energía rave del sur de California de los años 90, encarna resiliencia, herencia y amor. Cada puntada es un homenaje a mi pasado y una celebración de lo queer y la identidad. Las raíces indígenas se fusionan a la perfección con el estilo contemporáneo: zapatillas Nike con conchas de bailarinas aztecas, bolsas de supermercado renacidas como folletos rave precolombinos. La tradición se encuentra con la innovación en un mixtape visual que resuena con rituales antiguos y alta costura callejera contemporánea. Koyotl (Koyō:tl) trasciende la ropa; es una declaración desafiante, un faro para los de afuera. Como persona medio indígena, acepto mi herencia mestiza, desafío las normas y defiendo la individualidad. A través de Koyotl, invito a otros a encontrar su tribu, abrazar la singularidad y bailar al ritmo de su corazón.

Clothing is more than mere fabric: it’s my canvas, where tales of rebellion, cultural pride, and growth intertwine. Each piece, from ancient Aztec echoes to ’90s SoCal rave energy, embodies resilience, heritage, and love. Every stitch is an homage to my past and a celebration of queerness and identity. Indigenous roots merge seamlessly with contemporary flair—Nike sneakers with Aztec dancer shells, grocery bags reborn as pre-Columbian rave flyers. Tradition meets innovation in a visual mixtape resonating with ancient rituals and modern street couture. Koyotl (Koyō:tl) transcends clothing; it’s a defiant statement, a beacon for outsiders. As a half-indigenous person, I embrace my mixed heritage, challenge norms, and champion individuality. Through Koyotl, I beckon others to find their tribe, embrace uniqueness, and dance to the rhythm of their corazón.

Nancy Ocegueda
Nancy Ocegueda es una artista de técnica mixta en Morongo Basin y esta estudiando para su Licenciatura en Bellas Artes en CSU San Bernardino. Su práctica artística es influenciada por sus experiencias como inmigrante de Mexico, de su familia y comunidad. Estos temas se interpretan visualmente a través de grabados, pinturas y obras esculturales. El arte de Nancy se asemeja al rasquachismo por el uso de objetos encontrados y la sensibilidad de “crear con lo que tienes”. Más allá de sus propios esfuerzos creativos, emplea el arte como herramienta de acción social.

Nancy Ocegueda
Nancy Ocegueda is a mixed media artist residing in the Morongo Basin and is currently pursuing her Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) degree at CSU San Bernardino. Her artistic practice is heavily influenced by her experiences as a Mexican immigrant, family, and community. These themes are visually interpreted through printmaking, paintings, and sculptural works. Nancy often incorporates found and ready made materials in her artwork to enhance narratives and evoke a sense of familiarity. Nancy’s art resembles rasquachismo through the use found objects and the “making do with what you have” sensibility. Beyond her own creative endeavors, Nancy employs art as a tool for social action. Her artistic journey has been nurtured by numerous mentors who provide valuable resources, aiding in the growth of her artistic practice and professional career in art education.
We enjoyed a windy day of painting sculptures and screenprinting desert themed bandanas at Cottonwood with our March artista, Nancy Ocegueda! Thank you to Nancy for her fabulous talents and skill sharing, and thanks to our attendees for braving the elements with us in the National Park!

Cecilia Romero
Cecilia Romero es una músico, muralista y pintora de bellas artes que vive en Yucca Valley. Cuando no está tocando en su banda Flames of Durga, se sumerge en un mundo de pintura tremendamente colorido que ella misma crea. Con murales y pinturas a gran escala como foco, Romero crea un vívido paisaje onírico de personajes que combinan el mundo real y el mítico. Con un enfoque en edificar a las comunidades a través del arte público, Cecilia alienta a las generaciones más jóvenes a expresar su creatividad interior mientras difunden esperanza e inspiración a través de sus vibrantes y coloridas creaciones. Su arte se puede encontrar en Los Ángeles, el Alto Desierto y México.

Cecilia Romero is a Yucca Valley based musician, muralist, and fine arts painter. When she’s not playing in her band Flames of Durga, she is immersed in a wildly colorful world of painting she creates for herself. With large scale murals and paintings as her focus, Romero creates a vivid dreamscape of characters combining the real world and mythical. With a focus on uplifting communities through public art, Cecilia encourages younger generations to express their inner creativity while spreading hope and inspiration through her vibrant and colorful creations. Her work can be found in Los Angeles, the High Desert, and Mexico.
