2020 Minerva Hamilton Hoyt Intern Named

For Immediate Release

2020 recipient of the Pasadena Garden Club’s Minerva Hamilton Hoyt Internship

Twentynine Palms, CA, December 3, 2019 – The Joshua Tree National Park Association is pleased to announce that Julijana Soares has been selected as the 2020 recipient of the Pasadena Garden Club’s Minerva Hamilton Hoyt Internship.

The internship’s goal is to honor the memory of one of Pasadena Garden Club’s most esteemed and environmentally impactful members, Minerva Hamilton Hoyt, who is credited today for being most instrumental in the establishment of Joshua Tree National Park. It is also the goal of the internship to promote and “protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and actions in the fields of conservation and civic improvement”, which comes directly from the purpose of The Garden Club of America.

Now in its second year, the internship is awarded annually to a student from Copper Mountain College majoring in Environmental Studies or General Sciences and maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better. Ms. Soares was selected from a field of applicants based on materials submitted to a panel of professionals from Copper Mountain College and the Joshua Tree National Park Association, and her internship will begin in CMC’s Spring 2020 semester (January 24-May 20). She will work under the supervision of Joshua Tree National Park employees in the Science and Resource Stewardship division, and will perform a mix of fieldwork, data entry, information compilation, and scientific research.

Last year’s recipient, Yanina Aldao Galvan, focused on studying the effects of early bloom in Joshua Trees, and recently presented her findings to both the Board of Trustees at Copper Mountain College and the Pasadena Garden Club Board of Directors. As a direct result of her research, she also received further college scholarships, and says of the experience “with this internship, we are literally pollinating the minds of the youth who are interested in Joshua Tree National Park.”

Congratulations to Julijana Soares on being selected for this prestigious internship.
