Unveiling of Memorial Plaque for Renowned Artist Steve Rieman at Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center

Twentynine Palms, CA, February 2, 2024 – The Joshua Tree National Park Association (JTNPA) is honored to announce the unveiling of a memorial plaque dedicated to the late Steve Rieman at the Joshua Tree Visitor Center (JTVC), 6554 Park Blvd., Joshua Tree, CA 92252. The event is scheduled for Friday, February 9th, from 1 pm to 2 pm.

Steve Rieman, an internationally renowned artist and, together with his wife, Ruth, a recipient of the JTNPA Minerva Hoyt California Desert Conservation Award in 2012, passed away on March 29, 2023, after battling cancer. His profound impact on the art world and his commitment to the conservation of Southern California deserts will be commemorated during the ceremony.

Steve Rieman’s artistic legacy is evident in his numerous sculptures exhibited at various venues throughout the Joshua Tree National Park and beyond. His works, characterized by their
connection to nature and sustainability, explore the delicate balance between advancing technology and preserving the natural environment.

The unveiling ceremony will feature Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent Jane Rodgers and JTNPA’s Executive Director Jacqueline Guevara sharing a few words, followed by the official unveiling of the memorial plaque. Ruth Rieman, Steve’s wife, will also address the gathering.

The memorial plaque unveiling ceremony is open to the public, and JTNPA encourages
community members to join in honoring and appreciating the legacy of Steve Rieman and his
unique contributions to the desert landscape. The event begins at 1 pm, but guests are encouraged to arrive a little earlier to ensure timely participation. Light refreshments provided by Roadrunner Grab+Go will be available for attendees to enjoy.
